I learned this acronym a few weeks back from Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church. I hope this helps you to grow your business.
S
STORY - May I hear your story?
Ask the person about how they got to where they are. People love to tell their story. The key is to keep your mouth shut and listen! Afterward, the person who talked with you might just think you are the most interesting person in the world.
p
PASSION - What are you passionate about?
Ask the person what they yearn to do. What are they naturally inquisitive about? Now keep in mind that passions are different from strengths. For example, I have a passion (on occasion) for singing at the top of my lungs in my car, but I’ll leave the real singing to the pros like Bono and Pavarotti! Strengths, on the other hand, have those same qualities of passion and yearning, but with an added ingredient – acknowledgement from others that I am gifted in that area. If you'd like to learn more about your strengths, you might consider the work of Marcus Buckingham.
E
ENCOURAGE - You know what you would be good at?
Encourage the person to try it out. Empower them to take the risk to pursue their dream or passion or new idea.
A
ASSIST - How can I assist you to get you where you want to go?
This is where you get practical. Ask how you can provide real, tangible help. Does your acquaintance need venture capital? A new website? Business development expertise? A business mentor? Market research? Someone just to listen to their ideas?
K
KNOW - Who do you know who I should know?
This is the only self serving piece of the equation. Notice it comes last! Ask the person if there is anyone in their circle of influence who they think you should meet. As you already know, this is simply the power of networking, but with the added benefit that you have made it clear to the person you are speaking with that you are on their side. You have established a level of trust. And trustworthy relationships plus networking equals rapid business growth!
Have a great weekend!
